Adrian Piper
Bitchin’ Conceptual artist, best known for her Catalysis series in the 1970’s, Piper physically transformed herself into a “weird”, almost repulsive individual where she would then enter the public domain in order to observe her interactions/reactions with other individuals around her. These explorations went as far as covering her clothing with sticky wet paint or a vinegar/egg mixture while shopping at Macy’s, all of which were to bring emphasis on the relationship between the artist and the public.
Her interest in the movement against racism, racial stereotyping, and xenophobia in the 70’s thus introduced socio-political content into her work. In her 1975 performance piece, The Mythic Being, Piper took on the persona of a young, black male and went to public spaces to experience attitudes as well as responses from those around her. This specific performance piece brought forth the idea of placing the viewer in the same time frame as the subject/object being observed which ultimately eliminated the role of the artist as a mediator between the viewer and the subject which literally created a real time opinion of the work from the viewer. This specific performance piece thus brought awareness of the realities of racial discrimination. Piper, as a result, created cards she would pass out in response to such racial activity. (sampled below)
Keepin’ it real Piper, that’s why you’re a muse.
